WRITING TIPS
My goal is to give students and families tools to continue to grow as writers all year long. The Resources section below is a place to find some "Homework" assignments that may help.
As we begin writing, the process of brainstorming topics is very important. "Ideas for Narrative Writing" is a tool to help when the writer says, "I don't know what to write about!." A very basic "Journal Prompt" may help get your student into a daily routine of journaling. We encourage students to write about small moments in life when a Big Thing Happens. Finding writing topics can be easier when we learn to, "Live Like a Writer" and observe the world in new and memorable ways.
Organizing student writing is a major goal. A very basic "StoryMap" can help put the pieces of Narrative Writing together for students. There are many, many versions of the story map as an organizational tool, and you may enjoy the film industry version, the graphic Story Board to help organize your thoughts. Some families like to make word lists: nouns, verbs, adjectives, prefixes, suffixes, animals, months, days, etc. Another way to organize words, help with spelling, and demystify the English language is a simple "Word Hunt." I have provided one for words that end in "-ed." As we progress through the writing process, our main goal is to take our writing through all the stages of Writing Workshop, and hopefully publish our work!
